This just in – after more than two years of absence from the Linux scene, Slax developer Tomas Matejicek has finally released a highly anticipated new version of his popular GNU/Linux distribution.

Slax 9.2.1: The latest and greatest

The wait is over – Slax 9.2.1 is now available for download as the stable release of the Linux distro, and for the first time ever, it is based on Debian GNU/Linux. That’s right, Slax has left its Slackware roots behind. As its version number suggests, Slax 9.2.1 is built on Debian GNU/Linux 9.2.1 “Stretch.”

“After several years of inactivity, the Slax project has been revitalized with the release of version 9.2.1,” announced Matejicek in today’s release statement. “I’ve decided to make the switch to Debian, as it has made my life much easier, and I believe it will do the same for you.”

Still your go-to pocket operating system

Despite transitioning to Debian, Slax has opted to keep its Slackware-derived name and remains true to its slogan – “your pocket operating system.” With just around 220MB for its 64-bit live ISO image, Slax 9.2.1 maintains its lightweight nature. This release is also available for 32-bit and iPXE systems.

Slax 9.2.1 features the minimalistic Fluxbox window manager and includes only a select few applications, such as the custom xLunch application launcher. The default web browser is Chromium, and users can also access a terminal emulator, leafpad text editor, and calculator app.

Under the hood, Slax 9.2.1 boasts the long-term supported Linux 4.9 kernel, the same one used by Debian Stretch.
